Ghetto Heaven ft DJ Irwan @ Zouk Mainroom

He stole the show when he sang ‘So Sick’ by NEYO at Ghetto Heven’s 2nd Anniversary Party and he’s back to do it once again! DJ Irwan, one of Holland’s “urban-eclectic” sound founders and MOBO Award nominee, is one of the only known few DJ’s (if not the only one) who adds some lyrical flavors to his set, which creates a unique vibe: spinning, scratching and singing, while bringing the crowd to higher levels. As a result of his vocal skillz, Irwan’s first single will be officially released in the near future: a remake of Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna”. The single is also featured on the official MTV Pimp My Ride mix-cd mixed by DJ Irwan, which was released in February 2005.

Brought to you by Recharge

Currently #16 in the International DJMAG’s TOP 100, Marco V is a definitive DJ and producer who has worked hard to create a sound easily recognizable by its constant drive and uplifting melodies. His first album ''Con:Fusion'' became Holland’s biggest selling dance album of 2002 and was awarded Best Dance Artist Album at the BBM dance awards that year and reached DJMag''s mixed compilation top10 of 2004.

His single "More Than A Life Away" was released under his own label In Charge in May 2005, topped dance charts across Europe and was recently heralded by Paul Van Dyk on Radio One as his hot tune for the Summer of 2005. Later that year he released his much anticipated artist album “200V”. This is the perfect example of a powerful V-styled track, filled with that distinct techy use of synths and a constantly pumping percussion. '200V', with tracks like False Light, Calling The Shots, Red Blue Purple and A Great Escape, does things a little different by combining and blending several styles to show Marco's ever developing productional capabilities..

The Remember Series Continues

Upcoming events information

August 8th, 2006, Kuala Lumpur – For the first time in Kuala Lumpur, SmoovePinch presents “The Remember Series”, an exclusive multiple night tribute to the once-popular clubs of the 80’s and 90’s from April to December 2006. After hosting seven successful nights, the series continues with the eighth instalment with the tribute to Betelnut and Brannigans on Friday August 25 and at a new venue Sugar Club in Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel.

The Remember Series, held on Saturday nights from April to December 2006, are dedicated to “Baze, Scandals and Saqs” on April 8; “Boom Boom Room, Heaven and Modesto’s Forum” on April 22; “The Piccadilly Tea Dance” on April 29 and with, “Barbarran Bar and Dance Club” on May 13. A special bonus night was held as a tribute to “DV8, 1989-2006” on June 3. It then continued with “11LA, Faces & Phase2” on July 15 and “Viva Dance Club” on August 5. All the above events were held in Bond Lounge, AvenueK.

Betelnut was located at the prime location on where KLCC currently is and had its run from 1989 before closing in 1994. It was famous for the way the DJ’s used to engage the packed crowds with contest, giveaways of beers and other gifts and trivia’s along with the retro music of that era. The early years had Patrick Teoh’s Music Machine supporting the sound of Betelnut. A long list of DJ’s that used to spin there include DJ’s Spike, Skin, David Chew, Robert Ma, OJ, Kenny Bak Kut Teh, Philippe de Souza and more.

Brannigan’s on the other hand was located just off Jalan P. Ramlee behind the Crown Regency Hotel and the TwelveSI building. It began its operations in 1991 and lasted until the late 90’s. Most would have remembered Brannigan’s as the place to be as it operated just beside the first Modesto’s outlet, both of which had the famous Bob Wong’s Midas touch to it.

For this coming event at Sugar Club, the headline DJ’s will be David Chew from Red FM and Philippe De Souza (currently DJ’s at Rum Jungle and previously at Spikes and Hippy Club) representing the Betelnut crew while DJ Simon D’Cruz (currently hosting the Breakfast Show on Light & Easy FM) representing the Brannigans music. Together with possible special guest appearance of veteran Music Machine jock Patrick Teoh and Spike Yong who were synonimous with the very popular Betelnut and a host of other popular venues.

“The success of the series launch and the following nights turn out was a validation of the demand and this was just the beginning as people kept suggesting to us to do the other clubs too. Each night is entirely unique in terms of the crowd, music, DJ’s and overall atmosphere. Miss one and the next is not the same”, said Arvind Parischa of SmoovePinch.

The “Viva Dance Club” tribute on August 5 was a huge success with a full house turnout. The Viva resident DJ’s Jeremy, Chris and Royston rocked the night with classic R&B songs from 1999 and kept the crowd pumping until 3am. Unfortunately the main amplifier overheated just as DJ Jeremy took the decks with “Guns and Roses - Sweet Child of Mine” at 2.30am before building up to the House music set. Bond tried their best to fix the amp but all attempts to rectify the situation failed. The DJ’s kept the music going until the 3am closing time at half volume much to the dissapointment of many for the premature ending.

“The management of Bond Lounge, Avenue K would like to take this opportunity to sincerely make a public apology to the organiser, DJ’s and patrons for the technical glitch and other shortcomings.”, said Joanna Chee, director of Bond Lounge.

There is also the tribute to the Hotel Clubs like “Tin Mine and Club Oz” currently being scheduled on September 22 at Sugar Club itself, where Tin Mine used to originally be. A special reunion will also be organised for the clubbers of famed “The Backroom* KL” as it was originally in the underground venue of Menara Pan Global where another popular club called Fire used to exist before. The Clubbing Class of 1999-2000 will be reunited with the “Immaculate and Silhouette Sessions” as organised on the weekends helmed by House DJ’s Jungle Jerry, Nicky C, Special K and Desire back then. This will be held at a bigger venue to accommodate the over 1000 people anticipated to attend the event in November at Maison on Jalan Yap Ah Shak.

Exact details of this reunion is still being worked on along with other tributes to “Movement” superclub that eventually got burned down, “Echo, Ohm & White Room”, “Traxx, Pebbles and Legends” and other famous clubs planned for late 2006 in one grand finale event in a stadium featuring multiple rooms and a spectacular line up of celebrated DJs and artistes from the past.

This finale event “Reunite” will be a spectacular reunion of all sorts for the 25 years of clubbers from 1980’s til now. There will be retro live bands as well as live comedy performances and a possible foreign disco artiste concert in the pipeline just for the main stage area. The original DJs of the featured clubs have been brought back to jam together just for old times’ sake together with clubbers from that time period. The Remember Series will indirectly pay homage to more than 70 clubs that existed during that era.

“We wanted to make this event special as these clubs were legendary in their days. We had everyone emotional getting reunited with old friends and recalling memories from the past triggered by certain tunes from the past. For those who missed out, this is your one chance to experience how it was then. We also hope that those involved in these former clubs will come out to join us too and show them how to party. We want them to remember!” said SmoovePinch editor, Dave Avran.
