Celebrate 2005: The Official Party on Asian Heritage Row

While we're not forcing you to come, it would be a waste if you didn't. It's not often we get to do something this big, and so we thought, you all have been such a loyal supporter of our humble little getting bigger publication, we decided that you should have at the very least, the best as a treat.

So we dig'd our pockets, paid the peak season premium prices to bring you a few nights that you will eventually ask us to do again. Why? Well, if you do not know who Najee is, then you haven't experienced the way RnB parties sounded back in the 80s at places like Faces, 11LA, Phaze2, Baze and Saqs. If you listen to TraxxFM and hear that funky old track in your car that you wished the DJ's at Mambo Jumbo dropped once in a while, chances are, it was Najee who played it for you. He knows his music. He doesn't spin in clubs that often anymore. He's gonna spin the classic that you'll be singing along too, so please come and appreciate it.

I'm talking about the Shalamar's, Kool & the Gang, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Earth Wind & Fire, Cheryl Lynn, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Donna Summer, Barry White, Al Green, The Jacksons, Motown classics and alll that good stuff that you don't get in any club any where any more. Brown sugar old skool soul style.

Yours truly, JD, will also take to the decks on 30th. It's FREE. No cover charge on 30th Dec since after all, you deserve to have some fun before the craziness of New Year. Celebrate! With your friends, loved ones, partners, collegues and more. That's what & why we've worked hard to organise this for you and we need a break to party with you. Come early because we do expect a full house.

Again, by popular demand, there will be some stuff i'll play that Najee would have played but it will be played differently. You don't complain about listening to "Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha" every week do you? There will be some disco and funk stuff throw in as well like Funkytown, Freak Out, Let it Rip, Sun Ain't Gonna Shine and more of those classics retro stuff that we danced to when we snucked out to the club at 18 years old back in the 80's. Yes kids, clubbing did exist before rave's, Picaddilly, Zouk and Modesto's. Good old days without having to pop. Just a funky baseline and beat got you moving.

As we usher in the new year, we thought it would be appropriate to fast forward back to the present future after taking you down memory lane. DJ Fuzz, our local Teh Tarik Crew hero and super DJ with 3 Original Mixed CD Compilations released to his credit, takes over after the countdown all the way til 3am. Again, another rare jewel who because of his commitments, doesn't get to perform his mad skillz mixing that most likely makes some pro-scratch DJ's out there look like they just scratched a CD for the first time. He will blow you away and as will DJ Nesh who's skill and talent of over 15 years spinning at packed DV8 and Nouvo Ladies Nite's brings in the New Year. Expect flawless super cool mixing techniques with all the great funky RnB songs that make you move more than ever.

So don't give excuses about you being too old to party. The music is going to be so good and you don't want to hear about it and regret not coming later. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all celebrating.

Spread the word. Thanks and c u there.

January 3rd & 4th Tuesday & Wednesday
Pierre Dorge & New Jungle Orchestra

Dorge is one of the most prolific and wide-ranging figures on the Danish
scene today.

New Jungle Orchestra was formed in 1980 and named after the legendary
growling "jungle" sound of the early Duke Ellington Orchestra, some of whose
compositions they have appropriately covered. Other major jazz influences to
be heard are Charles Mingus´ experiments with combining improvisation and
large-scale forms with the mobility of a group sized somewhere between a
traditional combo and a big band, the Gil Evans flux between forceful
anarchy and carefully layered, complex structures, and the ironic cabaret
touch of Carla Bley. NJO during its 20-year existence has placed itself, as
one of the most original, intense and enjoyable groups to be heard on
today´s global music scene.

Reviews
"It is unabashedly one of Europe´s most sophisticated jazz bands".....
"His (Dorge´s) imaginative play with African styles and instrumentation, is
unparalleled by any other musicians not of African descent" - Norman C.
Weinstein

Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2006

The Indonesian capital will once again play host to a major international musical and cultural event on 3, 4 and 5 March 2006 at the Jakarta Convention Center. The flagship 2006 Dji Sam Soe Super Premium Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival with the mission of “Bringing the World to Indonesia” is the second in an annual series and is already positioned as the largest music festival in Asia and one of the most important events in Indonesia’s arts and cultural calendar.

More than 100 jazz and contemporary groups, featuring over 1,000 musicians will perform in more than 150 shows on 15 stages over the 3 days. Audiences at the magnificent Jakarta Convention Center, the same venue as last year, are expected to top 60,000 and be treated to a kaleidoscope of jazz, fusion and cross over to pop, rock, soul, R&B, blues, hip hop, gospel, world/ethnic, electronic and many other genres with music to suit every taste.

The line up of international jazz, soul, rhythm and blues artists includes : Patti Austin, Kool & the Gang, Brand New Heavies, Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Jeff Lorber, Tower of Power, Mezzoforte, and many others. They will be accompanied by Indonesian jazz legends such as: Bubi Chen, Margie Segers, Oele Pattiselano, Luluk Purwanto, Andi Rianto, Elfa Secoria, Indra Lesmana, Ireng and Kiboud Lesmana, Benny Likumahuwa, Deviana, Gilang Ramadhan, Dwiki Dharmawan, and a long list of others.

Some foreign groups are sponsored by their cultural councils: Ad Colen Jazz Quartet by Erasmus Huis, Raphael Gualazzi by the Italian Cultural Institute, Youn Sun Nah by French Cultural Centre Culturel Francais, and Harri Stojka by the Austrian Embassy. The British Council also participates in this inter-cultural event.

New, up and coming names in the international and national music scenes will also be featured. These include: Omar & Carleen Andersen, Take 6, Marc de Clive Lowe, Daniela Schaechter, Hiromi, Ad Colen Quartet, Eric Benet, Aksan Syuman, Bintang Indrianto, Balawan, Rita Arsyad, Discus, Saharadja, Rieka Roeslan, Nial Djuliarso, Tomorrow People Ensemble, Nina Tamam, Ello, Glenn Fredly, Mocca, Tangga, Kahitna, and more.

From the 15 stages spread across the magnificent venue, visitors can enjoy over 150 performances during the 3-day span, each day offering 9 – 12 hours of shows. All shows are freely accessible with day ticket or 3-day multipass. For the 6 Special Shows, an additional special show ticket is required. The lineup of stars for the special shows at the Plenary Hall are: Patti Austin featuring Dave Koz and Rendezvous All Stars, Tower of Power, Take 6, Brand New Heavies, Omar and Carleen Andersen featuring Incognito, and Kool & the Gang.

Visitors can expect some new highlights at the festival. “Junior Jazz Stage” on Sunday will present: Rafi (a 9 year old drummer), Zefa (an 11 year old pianist), and Gadiz & Bass (young saxophonists - brother and sister). The “Big Band Stage”, also on Sunday, will accommodate a number of big bands that include: Hypersax & Co, Kirana (of Yogyakarta), Galaxy, Farabi, and one with 40 over members, Andi Rianto’s Magenta Orchestra.

Saturday will feature the Gita Teladan Marching Band, accompanied by Rio, a trumpet player from Bali. The band is showcased here in recognition of its role in introducing instruments essential to jazz such as brass and percussion to the school – age generation, thus helping develop jazz musicians. “Generation of Drums’, a joint production of the festival and Jakarta Drum School, will illustrate the evolvement of drum music, from ethnic to Latin percussion to modern drums, through drummers of different era: Benny Mustafa, Jacky Pattiselano, Gilang Ramadhan, Wong Aksan, and the 9 year old Rafi.

This year’s collaborations will include Doug Cameron, performing with a group of students from Pelita Harapan University, Dave Koz Rendezvous All Stars will share the stage with Indonesian Idols, and Michael Lington will collaborate with the Andi Rianto’s orchestra featuring Shakila and Harvey Malaiholo, plus others.

Enthusiastic learners will be delighted with the chance to watch maestros in different fields share their expertise: Balawan (guitar), Dave Koz (sax), Nathan East (bass guitar), Doug Cameron (violin), Maya Hasan (harp), Daniel Martina (guitar), Vinny Valentino (electric guitar) and Jakarta Drum School (drums).

To support the significant increase in the number of artists participating, this year’s festival will use all areas available at the venue, including Exhibition Hall A and B. Exhibition Hall B is designated to an international exhibition of music, audio and lighting equipment, run jointly with PT Pro Exh http://www.proexh.com

The tradition of showcasing Indonesian arts and culture will continue this year with the Moluccan Music Stage as the highlight. Well known musicians from the “Spice Island” Maluku will participate, including: Bob Tutupoli, Margie Segers, Harvey Malaiholo, Ruth Sahanaya, Shakila, Andre Hehanusa, Glenn Fredly, Joppie Latul, Ello, Utha Likumahuwa, Mike Idol, Daniel Sahuleka, and Massada.

Peter F. Gontha, producer for the program, said “We would like people to notice the substantial contribution made by Moluccan artists to Indonesian music, in particular jazz.” The show is a tribute to two well-deserving artists, John Pattirane and Chirs Kayhatu. A group of talented performers, flown to Jakarta from their hometowns in Maluku – sponsored by the local government - will add to the attraction. There will also be a display of Moluccan artists, traditional musical instruments, and tourism objects.

Trailblazing the development of the Indonesian jazz community, the festival will host a "Community Stage ", designed to open the door for existing jazz communities to communicate their presence through individual performances by each group and through collaboration in 'jam sessions'. In this way we hope to continue to move towards creating a synergy between jazz performers and devotees in Indonesia.

Once again the Festival has been warmly welcomed and fully supported by both the Culture and Tourism Minister and the regional government of Jakarta, in recognition of the immense significance of the event in promoting Indonesia, the richness of it's arts and culture, it's people and it's capital city to the world at large. The presence of the Festival every year is part of the tourism and culture agenda, "Enjoy Jakarta".

JJF 2006 is supported by major sponsors and partners, among others: Sampoerna, BNI, Telkomsel, Sosro, Medco Energi, BMW Indonesia, Mayora, Honda, Garuda Indonesia, LG, Blue Bird, Indomobil, KLM, Eva Air, Heineken, Qualcom, Jakarta Hilton International, Jakarta Convention Center, and almost 100 media enterprises, both national and international.

"In line with the characteristics of the Dji Sam Soe Super Premium as a high quality product. HM Sampoerna is focusing this year on contributing to, and supporting the promotion of jazz to help raise the level of Indonesian society’s appreciation for jazz "says Dji Sam Soe's brand manager Veronica Risariyana.
