Celebrate 2005: Asian Heritage Row Review

December 31 2005, Kuala Lumpur – For the first time, Asian Heritage Row (AHR) together with SmoovePinch.net.ms presented Celebrate 2005, a week-long celebration from December 23, 2005 to January 1, 2006. They ushered in the New Year with the fun, party folks along the Asian Heritage Row, on Jalan Doraisamy, beside Sheraton Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The now infamous street with its many outlets was filled with activities. There were back-to-back parties and special promotions at the various outlets throughout the AHR with the crowd enjoying an all-out party on New Year’s Eve.

Celebrate 2005 was a 10-day festive event covering lunch, dinner and afterdark promotions over the period of Christmas and New Year on AHR. The idea was to promote AHR as the preferred destination for the festivities with various promotions from the individual outlets as the main attraction. “The concept will eventually expand into other lifestyle themed events on AHR thorough out the year as more outlets opens, making it ideal for advertising and branding due to the diverse demographics the row already caters to”, said the organisers.

With more than 15 outlets having varying promotions and items on offer, there was something for everyone. From great value lunch and festive season dinner packages to parties to dance the night away covering live bands, local and international DJ's or drink promotions for chilling out after work. Whatever your flavour, AHR is sure to have it and have it, it did on NYE.

“The Asian Heritage Row is part of a plan to create Heritage Village KL, a cluster of old houses converted into upmarket and hip food and beverage outlets,” – Asian Heritage Row Sdn. Bhd.

Nestled in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, the AHR is the new hot spot for everything food, fun and fashionable. With over 15 outlets ranging from restaurants to clubs to bars to even foot reflexology, one is spoilt for choice. The venue was the obvious choice for “Celebrate” to fuse the various outlet offerings, cultural and heritage elements.

The popular venue bars and clubs – including Mojo’s, Bar Savanh, W Wine Room, Bar Blonde, Ivy’s, Cynna and The Loft - all ran entertaining danceable music from retro to contemporary R&B, house and jazz music.

Last Friday, Dec 30, Mojo’s featured DJ’s JD and it’s resident Nesh (previously from Nouvo and DV8 residencies) whose repertoire will include sexy soul classics like Shalamar, Diana Ross, Kool & the Gang, Chaka Khan and Earth Wind & Fire. It was great to see the crowd relishing and doing the disco hustle. The crowd was transported back to the golden KL clubbing days of 70’s through early 90’s striking a memory chord with every tune. Nesh also hit the decks at Mojo’s for the New Year’s countdown with his funky wizardry on the mixers with R&B and Hip-hop tunes also popular with the regulars that didn’t leave the dance floor.

Upstairs Club Lounge at The Loft featured Camelia for their countdown and foreign DJ Marco whose sexy pumping house beats kept the packed crowd going till the early morning. The stunning view of KLCC from Upstairs also meant that it was one of the best places to be on NYE. Cynna featured resident DJ’s Gregoire and Funkie Junkie with the special appearance of DJ Glynn Tandy playing to a trendier crowd. DJ Kumar rocked Bar Blonde down on Dec 30 while DJ Partyman, spun commercial R&B and Hip-hop tunes with a dash of groovy house on NYE. Being one of the “no cover charge” outlets on AHR, it was packed with those who wanted a great time without the price.

The Ivy was also filled with people being entertained through dinner all the way till post countdown with DJ John Dave to the tunes of soulful up tempo R&B. Bar Savanh was not to be left out and had DJ’s De Sash and De Rajj taking their guests through the decades with a medley of tunes fitting for the occasion. The W Wine Room featured Booty Boys on live band entertaining to a more posh and elderly audience who still knew how to have a great time. They also launched the newly opened extension of the outlet which was previously the upper floor of the now closed Turkish Restaurant, Saray.

The Christmas weekend also had songstress Camelia doing a live PA at Cynna and DJ Najee from Traxx FM dropping the retro R&B classics from yesterday at Mojo’s. Party packs were given away to those visiting the outlets on the row to add to the festivities.

The restaurant outlets like Kristao, That Indian Thing and Senja also didn’t miss out on the fun by keeping the patrons stomachs nicely filled with their delicious food and beverages. Even Palacio restaurant at the end of the row had people dancing after dinner. Patrons to the AHR certainly happily enjoyed the celebrative offerings, festively decorated outlets, balloons and party packs and promotions packages. All in all, with seven venues to choose from to dance and party as well as a host of food outlets with international flavours to feast, AHR was a very popular place to be on NYE obvious from the traffic still pouring in onto the row even after 2.30am. There is surely more on offer from AHR in 2006.

amNYEsia aftermath

December 31 2005, Kuala Lumpur – More than 400 turned up at amNYEsia 2005 which was organised by Nocturnal as a private an exclusive party for the future rich and influential power blood of KL. If you wondered where some of the regular high rollers and beautiful women usually seen in the VIP sections of clubs like Velvet Underground, Cynna, Sugar and The Loft, chances were, they were all possibly at amNYEsia or outside KL travelling.

amNYEsia was organised by a few of these influential club socialites as a follow up to the successful “The Birthday Party” titled events in 2003 and 2005. Originally held in Sobranie Cinema / Café Citron Garden off Jalan Stonor, The Birthday Party was attended by the who’s who of the KL clubbing and socialites. Special CD Invitations with a DJ mixed compilation were exclusively customized and given out to over 300 close friends and guests as a preview of the night to be. A multimedia show welcomed guests into the venue and the open bar promised a night to remember or very blurry for everyone who attended. Two rooms were filled music with R&B and House featuring celebrated DJs of our local and international circuit coupled with exotic dancers. The successful event is still much talked about as THE birthday party to beat even until today.

The 2005 birthday event was held on Nov 11 at the new Café Citron on Jalan Eaton. Similar to the first “The Birthday Party” but improved in concept, it was expanded to celebrate birthdays of the five organisers. Music was supplied by established DJ’s including the likes of Jungle Jerry and JD who took guest on a trip of Retro, R&B and Deep Disco House. As expected, the future VIP’s of the KL social, business and political world and the accompanying beautiful women came as guests under private invitations.

“Celebrities such as Gol and Gincu lead actor Ashraf Sinclair, model and host Shamser Sidhu, Sazzy Falak of Beat TV, model Hannah Loh, Pillow Talk host Jojo Struys, 8TV hosts Marion Caunter and Adam Carruther, Miss Malaysia runner-up Chermaine Poo, Miss Chinese International 2005 Jolene Chin, MTV hosts and twin models May and Choy Wan were among the star-studded line up of guests that partied with us at The Birthday Party”, said Kean Au, one of the organisers for the event.

“We arranged divans together with plush cushions on the lawn where people could chill out and have their drinks together with their shishas. Naturally, it made sense to do one for NYE. That’s how amNYEsia concept came about”, added Raphael Hamzah and Sheridan Shan of Nocturnal.

The venue was converted into an indoor and outdoor garden party under the stars with a breathtaking view of the fireworks at KLCC. The guest list was strictly by qualification of friendship to the organisers and recognised VIPs or beauties in the clubbing social circle. Even a few notable guests and beautiful ladies latecomers without tickets were denied entry and attempted to pull strings to get in. Yes, it was that exclusive.

“We had no choice but to maintain a certain high quality luxury standard to protect the amNYEsia™ brand and ensure the comfort of our distinguished guests”, commented Nizran Kudus, the leader of the organising group Nocturnal.

amNYEsia pre-sale tickets (RM100 for ladies and RM150 for men) were sought after even before the event, as it was sold out within a few days before NYE. Marketing was done via the online community on Friendster, SMS and via word of mouth. With an open bar free flow on all beverages policy until late in the morning and a lavish RM250 dinner package thrown in by Café Citron, attendees had a great time celebrating NYE amongst familiar friends and faces.

The music was upbeat fresh and funky keeping everyone dancing indoor and outdoor in the garden. DJ duo, Mr Q (one time resident DJ at the White Room in Bangsar) and foreigner DJ Miska with his funky blonde dreadlocks kept the crowd going as they both took turns at the decks with deep house. Then another duo DJ combination of the famous Jungle Jerry and JD took to helm together dropping a recipe of infectious tribal electro beats and fusing memorable club classic anthems from the likes of Moloko, White Stripes and Stardust keeping the crowd truly entertained as they surprised them with each track.

Jerry came fresh from DJ’ing at the outdoor UCountdown party at 1-Utama while JD rushed all the way back to KL after spinning at the Celcom Xpax 3G street party in Menara DNP, Johor Bahru, just to make it for their duo set at amNYEsia.

“We had an absolutely amazing time. This is our first time here at amNYEsia and we weren’t sure what to expect but it’s turned out to be the best New Year’s party for us. Everything from the venue to the superb music was so well organised! We simply love it”, said foreigners Jo Fairclough and Finton who were in KL for holidays and stayed on until the end.
The amNYEsia multimedia tagline summed it correctly for all their 400 guests as a memorable night to remember: “We dare you to forget”

MOST DJs fall into club-life because they love music. Not Dave Seaman. Seaman has headlined clubs on every continent – he is one of the UK’s most travelled, most creative, and most celebrated DJs in the world. Dave has spent the last year in a creative whirlwind. He’s about to release the second volume of his Audio Therapy mix series, with Luke Chable, for Renaissance. Audio Therapy is also a leading independent label – home to Dave’s Group Therapy project, as well as a roster of diverse talent that covers all bases from progressive through to breakbeat and the funkier styles of French house. It’s an imprint that’s kick-started the recording careers of Infusion, Habersham, Ernest Saint Laurent and Stel. With a set up like this behind him, it’s no surprise that Dave is now tailoring back his international DJ commitments to focus more attention on his recording career. But he remains a star DJ with an enviable, international reputation, and his disarming Northern humour means this never goes to his head.
“It’s about having fun, but understanding that the music has got depth as an art form. Finding that balance. I try to put that ethos into the records that we make and into the DJing that I do,” he says, “trying to give dance music an identity beyond the underground.” This instinctive understanding of what clubbing is really about means Dave Seaman is perfectly placed to enjoy dance music’s creative revival. “Acid house is dead,” he enthuses, “long live acid house. Here we go again!

Voodoo feat Bass Agents and Fono @ Zouk Mainroom

From the Melbourne underground to above the deserts of Australia to the center equator, The Bass Agents are born. The name stems from 1 main element, the hardness of a driving bass line. Our music choice includes Hard House, Hard Trance, Hard NRG and HardStyle. The agents consist of 5 aspiring DJs who aim to provide the hardest yet uplifting sound whether it is a fusion mix of Hard Trance & Hard NRG or even creating the most psychedelic sound that is truly original and energetic for clubbers to experience on the dance floor. The Bass Agents has been around for a number of years abroad and locally. Most of the time they have been abroad mainly in Melbourne where the hottest party night goers seek for hard dance. Now, The Bass Agents are pushing Hard Dance to the Kuala Lumpur scene and taking it to another level. Join Digital and XT-Acid as they combine their feverish beats with resident DJ Fono’s already gooving sounds.

Germany’s electronic funk soul brothers, Ali and Basti Schwarz, are as cool, hip and any other adjective declaring them to be implausibly great as it gets right now. In the words of the tragic Nathan Barley, they are ‘totally Mexico’. And if you thought dance music was only populated by po-faced, studio bores, Ali and Basti’s infectious enthusiasm will soon have you thinking otherwise.
Having preached their driving sermon across the globe, their ability to move dancefloors of any hue (for proof, see last year’s mesmeric Misch Masch mix) has fed straight back into their burgeoning sound. And now this explosive triptych of talents has crystallised fully to form Tiefschwarz’s most alluring statement to date: their new longplayer, Eat Books.

Johnnie Walker Black Label presents GLAM: The Breakfast Club @ Velvet Underground

GLAM better known as “Glamour” became a 1980's norm and occasion wear was influenced by the romantic idea of dressing up. Dressing up was in again and filtered every avenue of fashion eventually influencing the world, through media uptake via television soap operas like Dynasty.

Glam performers often dressed androgynously in make up and glittery, outrageous costumes, not dissimilar to costumes that Liberace or Elvis Presley wore when performing in cabaret. The most famous example is David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust phase. Sexual ambiguity became a game; Bowie told the press he was bisexual simply for the publicity while the late Jobriah is thought really to have been rock's first openly gay star. One of the most famous examples of a bisexual glam rocker is Freddie Mercury of Queen.

So catch “The Breakfast Club” as they prance around in detention room in their Glam: New Romantics attire and leave in their wake mayhem and destruction. So for all you fashion addicts, this is a event not to be missed!

Admission (inc 1 drink): BY INVITATION ONLY before 11pm /// RM 35 (Ladies) & RM 40 (Men) after 11pm

Babooshka presents Danny Rampling @ Velvet Underground
Recharge Card Privileges apply
Brought to you by Recharge

Danny Rampling has been DJing for over 18 years on the DJ circuit. However 2005 will be his final year as a professional DJ and he will be making a final appearance on New Years Eve. There will also be a final farewell London party in December, at Turnmills on December 3rd. The passion and the energy he has projected to help develop the UK house scene in its infancy was contagious, it spread like wildfire and regardless of what the cynics may have said it was a rebellious force that made a positive statement for change in British youth culture. Especially, during the golden years of 88/89 in the second summer of love.

A little farewell note from Danny Rampling:

‘I feel I have made a major contribution to the history of club culture and fulfilled most of my dreams and ambitions over the course of the last 18 years as a professional club and radio DJ. Time certainly doesn’t stand still when you are having such much fun. It feels as if I have been on one long holiday, partying and traveling across the globe.

I’d also like to thank all my fans who have supported me throughout my career and helped keep the spirit alive on the dancefloor.

I’m certain that some of the gigs leading up to my exit on New Years Eve will be emotional at times, however this is a celebration for change and not sadness. I love music and it will always be part of my life. But why?

Over the years of playing around the world, I have been fortunate in developing a taste for fine wines and modern eclectic cuisine. Many of my friends are chefs and wine importers and the passion and enthusiasm I have for this has made me take the decision to bow out at the top and open a restaurant in central London next year. My son Claudio and my wife Patricia will also benefit from me being at home in the city full time rather than jetting off around the world.

Shanon Shah at Alexis Bistro in January

Shanon Shah released his debut Malay album, Dilanda Cinta, in early 2005 to critical acclaim. The 10-track album contains nine original songs with music and lyrics composed by Shanon.

Shanon began his music career in Kuala Lumpur by entering and winning the New Millenium Patriotic Songwriting Competition.

In 2004, Shanon was named Most Promising Artist at the 2nd Annual Cameronian Arts Awards. Then a year later, Shanon took the plunge and quit his day job. He now spends his time alternately rejoicing and despairing at his decision to divide his time between performing, writing and advocating human rights.

On these two nights at Alexis Bistro, Shanon will be accompanying himself on the piano, singing songs from his ablum and also covers ranging from the Mamas & the Papas to Leonard Cohen.

Also expect some very special friends of Shanon's like Sukania Venugopal and the incomparable Ida Mariana to light up the stage with their sexy and sultry stylings.

Admission Free.

SmoovePinch'ed: Shanon gave a truly memorable performance. He brought the house down with some classics and leaving the crowd with multiple encoregasms. Not bad for a first show. We like! ;)

Loft 1st Anniversary Party

SmoovePinch'ed: We raised our glasses to The Loft KL! Happy 1st Anniversary. Delicious food from Mezza Notte and Tokyo Tei guranteed that it was gone the moment it was served. Timely spaced and catchy performances kept the crowd entertained. DJ Marco (Holland) played the warm up set to get everyone in the mood for the night to come. The Free Flow also kept the invited guests happy. All in All.. a very good night.. :)
