Weekly at The Sugar Club

Sugar at Crowne Plaza Mutiara on Jalan Sultan Ismail intends to cater for this generation, with great music from local circuit DJs, international acts and live performers.
Sugar sets itself apart from the rest of club land by hosting a selection of essential house music with a mixture of star DJs and live performers on the weekends. You will find our exclusive residents on rotation weekly dropping upfront house music. Featuring Jungle Jerry, Giorgio Acosta and K, plus appearances from percussionist and saxophonist team Bangers & Mash. Support will come from Sugar resident DJ Jay Fong.

Our headlining Saturday Night Session with Giorgio Acosta will be packed full of tracks that he will bust on the dance floor, from Blaze to the Salsoul Orchestra. Specially jetting in from Bangkok for an exclusive three-hour set every week, he has promised to deliver a sexy, steamy journey across three-hours from garage city house to French grooves to soulful Latin house and tribal Afro-beats… accompanied by the outstanding Bangers on percussion.

And we have been waiting to announce this one for ages: the artiste formerly known as Special K, now just K, joins us to tear up the dance floor with his weekly Friday Night Session. K is considered the master of 21st-century disco. What makes his new residency with Sugar special is that he will be playing a three-hour set of classic and future vocal anthems, cool funky house and uplifting twisted disco, backed by the fantastic Bangers on percussion. Acosta and K are not the only headline DJs for the weekend. Sharing the top bill for the Friday and Saturday Night Sessions is Jungle Jerry, famed for his obsession with deep house grooves. Jerry is one of KL’s most prolific and successful club DJs; no other can touch his superb mixing abilities. If the line-up featured Jerry by himself, it would be huge. When he joins Acosta and K behind the decks, you know it’s going to be a legendary set.

Sugar is also delighted to host an excellent selection of R&B, hip-hop and soul; lounge and retro music on weeknights with club resident DJs Nicholas Lee and De Rajj.

Goola Goola nights on Thursday is not your regular mambo jumbo session. You know this boogie is for real. With all the love from the club days of before, Nicholas promises an escapist’s set of retrospective dance music, reaching back from the 90’s all the way to the 70’s. What’s more, the Afro-puffed waiters, flamboyant diva bartenders and sexy Chippendale-simulated dancers could be an outstanding surprise!

Caramel nights on Wednesday steer clear of the standard ladies’ nights out. With sexy dance R&B, hip-hop and soul music, De Rajj puts some canned heat in your feet, along with percussionist and saxophonist duo Bangers & Mash. Weave those positive ebony vibes into your mid-week night out and sweeten up your party with a quick-fix manicure and satellite nail art at the VIP zone for a song.
Sugar can confirm that these flagship events will live up fully to all expectations. You’ll find the same meticulous attention paid to the music policy every night. We could not have wished for a better week. Lending itself perfectly to the KL clubbing crowd, Sugar is looking good and feeling gorgeous! And when we say that every night is going to be unmissable, we mean it!

Caramel, Goola Goola, Friday Night Session and Saturday Night Session are from 10pm to 3am. Free entry for ladies on Wednesday and Thursday; first drink charge for men.

Sugar Mounts ‘The Apprentice Hours’ For Music-Loving

Got a few free hours after the last meeting? Here’s a place you can get to in less than 30 minutes: a downtown dance club that’s making a business out of social and corporate networking by giving its music-loving crowd reason to come back.

Sugar has long been more geek than chic, being located at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel (formerly The Hilton). But the humble club has gotten a makeover and now provides a new and improved “Wow!” factor that lands it firmly outside a sea of similar venues.

With a brand new “happy hours” session called The Apprentice Hours and a new hit management, Sugar plans to become one of the best-performing after-work clubs by refusing to act like one.

The Apprentice Hours is a revolutionary concept designed to fit the people who use it, a music club where businessmen and women can meet other corporate leaders outside the boardroom, creating an opportunity for adventurous entrepreneurs to make bank.

“The Apprentice Hours was created to fill a gap in the scene for the discerning and the sophisticated who are searching for an intelligent after-work venue,” says club owner Steve O’Connell. “They want a higher comfort level and more attention in an intimate ambience.”

“One thing that stands out at Sugar is the impromptu, interactive live entertainment element, a dynamic, cutting-edge and ever-evolving menu that lays to rest any notion that hotel venues are dull,” adds O’Connell.

Sugar plans to change the way people do business by offering an inventive and savvy environment that thrives on a regimen of relaxation. One of The Apprentice Hours introductions is The Comfort Zone, a pamper sector that offers 15-minute chair massages to stressed-out corporate climbers.

This quick fix therapy refers to a brief acupressure-based bodywork session done in a special chair in which you sit facing backwards, allowing the masseur access to your neck, shoulders, arms and back.

Along with wireless fidelity accessibility and plug points for laptops users, Sugar also provides middlemen hosts to facilitate the social and business networking for The Apprentice Hours. Never mind conventional wisdom, the evidence says that when bosses partner with workers, its good for the bottom line.

The “happy hour” prices are also good news for young players too.

The Apprentice Hours is weekdays from 5pm to 10pm.

But there is more to Vortex than just bottom heavy anthems and liquid funk rollers. A lover of all things jazzy, this affable music aficionado is also known to explore the confines of broken beats, deep house, bossa nova, funk, hip-hop and down tempo in his sets, piecing together a journey through sound that really is quite special. Whatever the genre, be assured that whenever Vortex's on the case you are in for quality. Here comes the drumz!

Zouk KL - September

Friday, 2nd September 2005 – Christian Smith @ Zouk Mainroom
Born in Stockholm, the DJ/producer has spent the last decade working relentlessly to bring his amalgamation of funky house and tribal techno to a global platform.
Although Swedish by birth, Christian spent much of his youth in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was stationed as a pilot, and this turn of fate played an unexpected role in determining his musical tastes.
It was the early eighties and the music at the time was early electro, soul, funk and late disco music. Groups like The SOS Band, Newcleus, funk bands like Cameo and tracks like Fade To Grey by Visage had a huge influence on Christian. Although his older brother and sister would bring home the dj mix tapes from the big clubs, with music from the pre house days. This is what Christian turned on to.
By the time Christian had turned fourteen, he looked old enough to get into the clubs himself and became, by his own admission, "a manic train spotter." Frequenting Sven Vaths Dorian Grey residency, this club had a big effect on Christian. He went to the clubs for the music and to check out the DJ's.
If Dorian Grey was Smiths introduction to the realms of electronic music, then it would be his experiences in another of dance music's capital cities that would help mould and solidify Christians deeply entrenched love for club music. Moving to New York in 1989, Christian discovered that, running parallel to its high profile house community, the city that never sleeps also had a thriving techno scene. All the early techno clubs had started in New York, with Joey Beltram at The Limelight and soon afterwards Jeff Mills.

Based in New York, Christian still plays regularly at festivals like Creamfields (UK and Ireland), Dance Valley (Holland) and I Love Techno (Belgium), and not forgetting clubs like Bugged Out, Liverpool, Tribal Sessions, Manchester and Fabric, London. Christian loves the music policy at Fabric, feels it is great to see such a big club pioneering such an underground sound. Smith also finds the time to run the increasingly popular weekly Tronic Treatment night in New York. Taking place every Monday at the tiny 200 capacity Baktoun venues, the night has already played host to Derrick May, Richie Hawtin and Sven Vath who have all rocked it. Tronic Treatment kicks against the cult of the superstar DJ. It has also had Derrick Carter, Junior Sanchez and Felix Da Housecat play at Tronic Treatment; it is not just techno people that go to Tronic Treatment.
Christian Smith's combination of talent, passion for music and hard work has seen his profile as both a DJ and producer grow in recent years and this looks set to continue. Bringing his funky fusion of house and techno to a worldwide audience, Christian believes that he's still only at the beginning. Whatever his next move, rest assured that Christian Smiths name will remain synonymous with funky, forward thinking dance music.

Saturday, 3rd September 2005 – Eclectic Phunk! Feat Blink @ Zouk Mainroom
DJ Blink - Don't let the name fool you. With his infectious combination of breaks, hip hop, funk, and electro, this hardcore clubber turned DJ is bound to open your eyes to whole new mix of groovy vibes. He began his journey behind the turntables spinning progressive tunes. Since then, his music has evolved rapidly developing a sense of style and maturity that's both unique and adventurous. Constantly pushing the limits, his turntable skills transcend the versatility of a Club DJ. This is evident when he finished 2nd and 3rd in VESTAX 2002 and 2003 and his most famed win, this year's Heineken FOUND@THIRST 2004 Champion. With deft mixing techniques and a passion for invading and incorporating various genres of music, Blink's routines are nothing less than an insane ride. I heard from Tiesto and the other Thirst DJ's that they were of a very high standard, even better than the South American DJs, I heard DJ blink from Malaysia is very good. In general, technical awareness and quality are very high." -Pete Tong

Saturday, 10th September 2005 – PUSH vs Trinity Feat Jungle Jerry, GrooveDoctor & Ray Soo @ Zouk Mainroom
Jungle Jerry - With a DJ career that spans more than ten years, Jungle Jerry has achieved the distinction of being the ‘Maestro of Mix’ within Malaysia’s Club scene. Commencing his career as resident DJ at Fire in Kuala Lumpur, he has been instrumental in transforming the expectations and standards of DJing in Malaysia and is responsible for elevating audience experience and expectations within the local club scene.
A lifetime love and appreciation of music coupled with a fascination of all that is associated with the music scene, has firmly established Jungle Jerry as the pacesetter for a new generation of DJ’s in Malaysia and in August 2003, he achieved the feat of executing the first-time ever “24-hour non-stop vinyl mixing challenge” for the Malaysia Book of Records.
Groovedoctor - With a pedigree that stretches back over thirteen years, the Groovedoctor has played a seminal role in the development of club culture in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From the boardroom to the dancefloor, he’s done it all. With a style that ranges from flamboyantly UK and US inspired Tech and Disco House grooves to darker, deeper tribal material at the hardest end of the spectrum, a Groovedoctor set will always have the dancefloor pumping and pulsating with the elements most important to him – funk and groove. A true visionary, the groove worker is never one to rest on his laurels, with his own productions & events coming up towards end of the year and more international gigs coming up in 2003, expect more groovy-ness from this deck operator. Dance music is about enjoyment; with an MD in beat surgery the Groovedoctor knows it better than anyone.

Friday, 16th September 2005 – Voodoo Feat Ronald Van Gelderen, a Dutch Trancemeister renown for his unique " cutting edge” trance sound with strong melody structures @ Zouk Mainroom
Playing all around the world make's him one of the most fast upcoming DJ's of this moment. Countries like UK, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Swiss, Greece, Germany, Poland, Israel, Canada, Spain, USA and many more are already known with this professional entertainer. Ronald's latest release "Cold Storage" made people realise that he's one of the pioneers in the Dance Music scene of this moment.
Music has always been the biggest passion in Ronald Van Gelderen's life. To mix love and hobby together, makes him standing at the top of his career now. In the Harbour City Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Ronald had toyed around with the idea of producing music while studying to become a technical engineer.
The year 2003 was another successful year for Ronald. The release of his single "PROCEED" has been a favourite in the worldwide dance scene, with great airplay (8 weeks in a row) by Judge Jules on BBC radio 1. Suffice to say, this record has been on the play list of all big trance jocks all over the world. After "PROCEED" Ronald came back with another smash hit "SUSTAIN" which was again a big favourite of some big jocks in the world. Ronald decided to experiment with vocals and the result was a record with his own vocals on it "Crying out" which again was a great success!!!
After 6 years of dedicated work for the TSUNAMI label, Ronald decided that it was time for a new challenge. Halfway 2004 he released his first track "Cold Storage" on ID-T Records / Be Your Self Music. "Cold Storage" is a huge bang, reached #7 in the Dutch Dance charts and is being played out by big names all over the world.
With his successful productions and a very hectic DJ career, you could say that Ronald already past the station of "upcoming" and is a definite established name in the Dance Music Scene.

Thursday, 15th September 2005 – Ghetto Heaven Feat T-Bone, Goldfish & Cash Money @ Zouk Mainroom
Cash Money is becoming a regular to these shores and in May 2004 he drops by Needle Xchange. The guys at Soul Brew will be proud to welcome Philly's legendary DJ Cash Money born Jerome Hewlett. The DMC champion back in 1988 Cash is without a doubt the hottest club DJ on earth, a fact supported by his place in the DMC hall of fame as the "Worlds Greatest DJ". His technique, tune selection and ability to grab the mic to hype an already over excited crowd leaves dancefloors in a sweaty frenzy. This is no ordinary Hip Hop DJ, cutting anything from classic party jams, to reggae, to disco this man has to be heard to be believed. Forget all the rest this is truly the best. For once do believe the hype!
There you have it, the quotes speak for themselves. Cash Money will rock your party like nobody else!
Cash Money is often credited with creating one of the crucial scratches of the turntable art form - the transformer scratch. The ever-self-effacing Cash Money credits another DJ, Spinbad, with the invention, but historians / trainspotters of the form say that Cash Money was the one to perfect it. His mixes graced many of Sleeping Bag Records' releases and his record with MC Marvelous (Marvin Berryman), Where's the Party At?, came out on the label in 1988. Since then he has competed internationally, and in 1988 when he won the world title, DMC then banned him from entering again, (just like they did later with Mixmaster Mike) because honestly no one else had a chance. In 1998 DMC placed him in the Hall Of Fame with the accolade of "Worlds Greatest DJ".
He is still the only DJ ever to hold all 3 major world titles at the same time, when in 1998 he won the DMC World Championships, the DMC world Supremacy and the American New Music Seminar DJ competitions. Over the years He has also worked as a producer / remixer with stars such as Snoop Dog, Q-Tip, Public Enemy and Busta Rhymes as well as topping the charts with PM Dawn in the early 90's.
Cash money is by far the best all round Hip Hop entertainer on this planet, it's a fact. His style is not Just Hip Hop, he plays Funk, Breaks, Disco, Electro, RnB, Reggae and Dancefloor Classics. Everywhere he plays promoters, DJ's and crowds alike agree, they have never seen anything like it before. He rocks everywhere he plays. When we met Fatboy Slim at the Boutique in Brighton, he bowed to Cash in respect and sighted him as one of his major inspirations next to Grandmaster Flash.
Cash money is himself an institution, after taking the Hip Hop world by storm in the late 80's, winning everything he entered, he put his hand to producing. After mounting up billboard smashes and releasing a worldwide platinum selling album, Cash has returned to what he loves best, Tearing it up on 2 Turntables.
DJ Cash Money invented the now mandatory "Battle Style" of placing the decks and is credited with inventing 4 different styles of scratching. To put it bluntly Cash has been one of the most influential Hip Hop DJ's the world has ever seen.
The thing that makes Cash so great is the fact that he's not just a technical scratch DJ. It's the fact that he first and foremost rocks a party with amazing music, crowd hyping mic skills and then takes it to a higher level with jaw dropping turntable skills that you can dance to!

While Jack describes his style simply as ‘house music’, in reality his club sets are always varied and innovative featuring big, hands-in-the-air, vocal anthems and monster club tunes progressing through to darker, twisted beats incorporating scratching and sampling.

Gerrie Malla
Introducing one of Hed Kandi’s most talented and versatile vocal artists, Gerrie Malla. Gerrie is well known for her powerful and richly soulful vocals, earning herself the deserved reputation as the little lady with the big voice
Drawing on her rich background of experience writing and performing in her home town Sydney, Gerrie has teamed up with DJ / producer Jack McCord to work on the red-hot Australian dance music collective, Soul System.
Gerrie’s first track with Soul System was 2004’s funky disco house track ‘Real Love’. Originally released locally in Australia the track caught the attention of people in the know and eventually wound up with UK label Hed Kandi. ‘Real Love’ gave Gerrie and Soul System their first success in the club charts and gained international attention with excellent compilation sales.
In the 12 months since then Gerrie has been hard at work touring with Soul System, wowing audiences and honing their live show to a truly amazing experience. Perhaps even more importantly, Gerrie has been getting busy in the studio working with international recording stars such as Stonebridge, Peyton and the Jungle Brothers.
Now, Gerrie is getting ready to do it all again with the release of Soul System’s latest track ‘Feel So Good’. Featuring UK label mate Peyton and fellow Aussie Marc Stockley, ‘Feel So Good’ was a surprise smash on the dancefloors of Ibiza last summer, prompting Hed Kandi to sign the track on the spot during Soul System’s last Ibiza tour.
With the pending release of ‘Feel So Good’ later in 2005 and a stack of big tracks to follow, it’s safe to say that Gerrie and Soul System are destined for big things.

Wednesday, 21st September 2005 – Heineken Green Room Sessions featuring 2 of UK’s up and coming live acts, Crazy P & Tortured Soul @ Zouk Mainroom

Crazy P
The progressive five-member band has further pushed the envelope on Brit-dance. Indeed, few attempt to fuse ‘70’s funk influences with deep house rhythms, pop melodies and soul instrumentation and even fewer succeeded. Crazy P’s last album, 24 Psychedelic Freakout, for example, is a beautiful constructed soundscape of Balearic-kissed beats, rolling dance grooves and subtle nuances that is instinctively groovy, occasionally laid-back, but always polished and musically hip. Yet, the band has made a real name for themselves on the live circuit and received regular airplay for some of their tricks. For example, the Faze Action mix of Crazy P’s single “Give It Up” was a huge hit with the likes of Stuart Patterson, David Duriez, D’Julz and Roger Sanchez regularly laying it out.

Tortured Soul
Also performing at the Heineken Green Room Session is New York band Tortured Soul, who have been hailed as pioneers of a new genre of music – live soulful house. Tortured Soul’s old-school live renditions of modern soul, danceable grooves, and infectious hooks have made them a household name in both the USA and Europe. Featuring the smooth sounds of drums, electric bass, vintage keys, and soulful vocals. Tortured Soul will bring a truly new interpretation of house music. Instead of the usual chunky blend of deejays, loops and mixers that one expects of house music, the three-member band performs completely live.
Admission: By invitation only

Zouk KL - August

Friday, 5th August 2005 – Eclectic Phunk! Feat Hybrid @ Zouk Mainroom
Hybrid is Mike Truman and Chris Healings from Swansea South Wales. They are the accomplished architects of house and progressive breakbeat who ventured further beyond the ecstatic knee-jerk response of the dancefloor by fusing their beats with powerful orchestral and cinematic soundscapes. Hybrid formed back in 1993 after bonding over Truman's remix of Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall’. They debut LP, 'Wide Angle' (released 1999) and its sister release 'Wider Angle' (remixes and live recordings of Japan tour) sold a total of 100,000 copies world wide. This lead to Mike and Chris DJing and performing live in the UK, Asia, Australia and USA. Hybrid opened this decade with 'Kid 2000' featuring the sensuous vocals of The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
The outstanding reviews and success of their debut went cosmic:“Hybrid, support act for MOBY in America, are collecting celebrity admirers. GILLIAN ANDERSON of the X Files and rocker TOMMY LEE hung around their dressing room like starstruck teenagers.” The Sun October 2000. The Moby US tour (2000) lasted nine weeks with 48 performances. Back in 2003, their second LP, Morning Sci-Fi, is the next ingenious step forward. The task of crafting new influences around their ever-mutating breakbeats has been a lengthy progression. Hybrid has also remixed over 40 artists including Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, Future Sound Of London and Moby.

Friday, 12th August 2005 – Godskitchen feat Tall Paul (no 19 in Top 100 Djs poll in the DJ Magazine @ Zouk Mainroom
The 1998 "Muzik" DJ of the Year, Tall Paul, began his DJing career in 1987 at the tender age of 16, playing for office parties at his dad's nightclub Turnmills. At the same time Paul started to run his own pirate radio station called Touchdown FM and had already managed to blag a spot on the capital's legendary pirate Sunrise FM. Paul also used his persuasive powers to get a one hour slot at Turnmills' Saturday all-nighter Trade and in 1990 his obvious talent gained him his first residency, and as gay clubs have always been at the forefront of innovation in dance music, Paul quickly became recognised for playing what one might alternatively call hard-edged-house anthems. Paul has since gone on to DJ all over the UK, currently holding a residency at Turnmills' Friday nighter The Gallery and plays regularly for Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Sundissential, Cream and Golden to name but a few. His popularity has seen him DJ worldwide travelling to Canada, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Hong Kong, South Africa and all over Europe.

... Paul now runs his own record label, Duty Free Recordings which incorporates an inhouse Studio based at Turnmills. The label has released tracks by JS16, Robbie Rivera, Radical Playaz, DJ Lottie, Durango-95, Dave Aude and Fergie. Paul has continued his own production success with tracks "Be There" and "Freebase", which continue's to confirm his reputation as being one of the key players in the UK dance scene.
Following on from the massive success of the "Mixed Live" Series in the US and Ministry of Sound's 'The Annual", Tall Paul kicks off his own compilation series ‘Globetrotting’. Over the last 12 monhs Tall Paul has never been busier DJing regulary in Ireland, Cyprus, Ibiza, Russia, India, Costa Rica, Peru, Brazil, USA, Sweden, Turkey, Tokyo, Tawain and the UK pushing his Global Sound. It is this extensive Global touring that Paul has developed a unique insight into the kind of tracks that lift the roof off clubs around the globe, from Lima to London! This has inspired his recently released mix album ‘Globetrotting’ recorded live at Gate One - Lima, Peru on the 2nd July 2004.

So Chic As To Be Slick

For most big city dwellers the thought of coming up to Penang simply means taking a break from it all, relaxing, catching up on Astro….in other words being bored. B*llsh*t! Penang is a happening place despite what some may believe and every now and then our man in Penang Stephan Vergara will be bringing the latest to you here on SmoovePinch.

Chic! Bar+Cafe
403 Jalan Burma, Pulau Tikus 10350 Penang

With clubs popping all over the capital city, it’s reached the point where most revelers have become blasé about a launch. So what if they have parquet floorings and gargantuan plasma screen TVs? It’s all worth jacks*it if the mood ain’t right and the vibe is off. Knowing this, BadBoyBen, DJ par excellence pooled his wit, charm and considerable style to put up an adult drinking establishment worthy of its name. Whip into that equation the fact that the man has got the cojones to set it up in Penang and you know that Chic! Bar + Café is set to change the party scene in Penang.

Set across from the once-happening Belissa Row, Chic! stands out from its neighbours with a décor that is both hip and energetic. The vibe you get just from entering the place is one that’s smooth yet raunchy (for those who don’t know what raunchy means, go ask your Mama). Set on two floors with the lower floor set more for conversation and business and the upper floor for dancing and really partying down, the set up is well anointed, making full use of the narrow but long architecture of the building.

Dedicated to house music, Chic! is one of a kind on the island, differentiating itself from the head shaking, slut booty-shaking, cheap imitations of a club in NYC. The heavy use of wood in the interior does make a difference – it’s called “class” for all you ignorant f*cks out there. Light fixtures become functional by recounting the history of house (think of is as the Cliff’s Notes version of Music 101 – The Fun Tutorials) and the staff have definitely been chosen for their looks (Check Niki out!), charm and ability to smile while balancing 6 glasses, a jug and an overspilling ashtray.

Chic! is proud to boast that it has almost 1200 cocktails to its menu and its got the primo stuff like Bollinger and Black Vodka. Sure you can get a soft drink, but would you want it soft when you can get it hard?

So who comes here? Baby, anybody who wants to have a drink, soak in house, be treated well and enjoy some class. There is no ageism here, it’s for classy people who want to avoid the hardcore pulse of techno, the whine of country & western and the drone of the opera. In a nutshell, if you want fun with sophistication, this is the place to be.
