No Black Tie July Calendar

July 12 ~ Wednesday
Rhapsody
If you've tuned in to the local independent music scene at all, you might have heard of these girls. They only really started performing live in November last year, securing a spot on local acoustic show Moonshine in their debut into the local independent music scene. Expect pop oriented tunes with jazz overtunes from this group, a combination of Ywenna on keys and Nicole on vocals, backed by sessionists on bass and drums. They list Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Jamie Cullum, Alicia Keys and Antonio Carlos Jobim as some of their musical influences and have been showcasing their stuff in various shows around KL.

The Sofa Sessions is an independent musical collective made up of Ariff Akhir who sings lead vocals and plays the guitar, Shahril Eashak on electric bass and Shahriz A E (Aie) on drums, percussions and additional vocals. The band is musically and stylistically influenced by bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Rolling Stones and the Dave Matthews Band. Events the band has performed at include the 2005 Sunrise Jazz & Rhythm Fest, various Music Canteen / Pan Global Insurance tour road shows, Starbucks Coffee series of live shows and many other independently organised live shows and private functions. The band is currently recording for a self-produced full-length CD expected to be released in the first half of 2006. The band's single, Three Songs, released in August of 2005, is available for sale at venues where the band is performing or by mail order. Visit the Sofa Sessions at www.thesofasessions.com

July 19 ~ Wednesday
Zalila Lee
Seen as a singer song-writer in many circles and also as a sessionist (back-up vocals, percussionist, and guitarist) in some. Started out when she was thirteen, her guitar has been riding along in her many journeys through life. Taking part in the Mont Kiara Jazz festival, Fete De La Musique, and numerous singer song-writer stints has put this young 25 year old in the midst of the on-going Malaysian 'Music Revolution'. Her vocal movie debut can't be commented upon as the ever controversial film, 'Lelaki Komunis Terakhir', has been banned. Zalila loves listening to The Cranberries, Lauryn Hill, and Alanis Morissette.

KOHL was formed in early 2000 when lead singer Saz was jamming at a Studio in Subang. After months of gigging with a slapped-together mob of professional musicians, it was high time to find a more permanent fix as their brilliance brought with them time constraints and commitment issues. First to be roped in was drummer Raj. Being 19 and intrepid at the time, Raj soon made his way behind the drum kit. Next to be drafted was Fahmi, best friend and confidant to our resolute drummer boy. 19 and staggeringly quiet at the time, Fahmi's dexterity and flair for guitars, did all the talking it took to get in. Finally, their bass man came to them on a stroke of luck. Having jammed with Sadat once enough to know chemistry when they felt it, his undeviating and definite skills, completed Kohl's lineup.
Performance at 10pm Rm20 cover

July 22 ~ Saturday

Equipped with a baritone voice and the tendency to write dark, heart felt tunes, he is also the organiser of local acoustic show Moonshine and co-organiser of visual arts + musical experimentation show Motion Picture Soundtrack. Incorporating elements of grunge, jazz, blues and soul, his influences include most things out of Seattle, life in general, black American music and the female species.

Shanon Shah is a singer-songwriter, and he has just released his debut Malay-language album, "Dilanda Cinta", under InterGlobal Music (M) Sdn Bhd to critical acclaim. The ten-track album – with 9 Shanon originals – is available at major music stores.
