Press Release: The Remember Series at Bond, Avenue K

May 2006, Kuala Lumpur – SmoovePinch presents “The Remember Series”, an exclusive four-night tribute to the once-popular clubs of the 80’s and 90’s in Kuala Lumpur. After three successful nights, the series closes on the hot trail of reliving wonderful memories from the past for those who turned up at the full house events.

The Remember Series, held on four Saturday nights from April to May 2006, will be dedicated to “Baze, Scandals and Saqs” on April 8; “Boom Boom Room, Heaven and Modesto’s Forum” on April 22; “The Piccadilly Tea Dance” on April 29 and will close with, “Barbarran Bar and Dance Club” on May 13.

The events held at Bond, Avenue K, was attended by over 500 people including VIPs, royalties, celebrities and TV personalities, old friends, media and previous owners of the clubs being paid the tribute to. Invited celebrities present included Sofia Jane, Linda Jasmine, Zahim Albakri, Amy Search, Joe Flizzow of Rap duo Too Phat and many more.

It was a very special night for everyone, especially for the more senior crowd, as they were treated to a historical discography of hit songs from the 80’s and early 90’s which they have not heard for a long time. The crowd was even singing along with every classic track played by the DJ’s. From the moment the event began, people were dancing and singing the night away until closing time.

“We were surprised by the emotional response and turn out from the crowd. So many people kept thanking us for reuniting them with past friends they haven’t seen over 10 years and bringing back the memories through the songs played. They just wanted more and more.” said Arvind Parischa of SmoovePinch.

The idea to do this came about while talking to old friends and the original DJ’s who started out at the various established outlets. Extensive research went into selecting the outlets to be featured for this series and tracking down the people involved, from the original club owners, promoters, managers, bouncers, clubbers and DJs. The Remember Series, with Hennessy V.S.O.P as main sponsor, will also indirectly, pay homage to more than 70 clubs that existed during that era.

“We talked and reminisced about the good old days, the various stories of our fun and embarrassing experiences, and of course, the clubs and music that defined that era. A lot of clubbers, surprisingly, recalled very specific memories of their favourite moments in those places and pestered us to do something to relive our adult youth,” said SmoovePinch editor, Dave Avran.

The “Remember: Baze, Scandals and Saqs” launch night was on April 8, featured DJs from these clubs like Mr Q who, ironically, spun at all the selected title clubs and Kumar from Baze. There was also a surprise guest appearance by DJ Najee of Traxx FM who covered more than 10 years of clubbing music and other outlets not featured in the series. Light and Easy Radio DJ, Farouk Khan, was also present to MC the event at one point.

The “Remember: Boom Boom Room, Heaven & Modesto’s Forum” night on Saturday April 22, featured the iconic and hilarious Joanne Kam Poh Poh who performed her show at 1am, with her Dream Girls dancers just as it was done back then, along with her rib-tickling trademark antics to the amusement and rapturous laughter from the packed venue. DJs Renu from Heaven and Edy from Modesto’s Forum contributed to the music for the evening with a surprise guest appearance from DJ Ganesh. It also featured a poverty and environmental picture exhibition from the United Nation’s Special Grants project done by Joanna Bessey, Zahim Albakri and Reshmonu.

“It was fabulous and glamorous! I know my fans have missed me tremendously and it’s fitting for me to do my show at this wonderful tribute just like old times! It was a little risqué like my old shows but the guests are all mature adults now” says Joanne Kam.

The “Remember: Piccadilly Tea Dance” on April 29, also stroked a chord for those who recall fondly going to their first social dance parties during the late 80’s on Saturday afternoons. It featured ex-Piccadilly resident DJ’s Jim and Kishore who did a surprise guest appearance, along with DJ Khairul, who also spun there at one time mixing things up.

The original promoter of the Piccadilly Tea Dance himself, Hasnul Zuhairi was also present at this tribute night with his road show crew to promote his Piccadilly Reunion event and meeting with the guests in Bond, Avenue K. This was part of the much anticipated pre-event build up of the actual reunion on May 6. The Piccadilly Reunion Crew made their last road show stop at Bond to register guests for the by invitation only reunion event. It even became the after party venue for those who attended the AIM awards that night with celebrities and other high society figures.

The “Remember: Barbarran Bar and Dance Club” night will be slightly different from the rest as it will feature the mixture of R&B and disco house anthems during the years 1998 to 2000. DJ Nicholas Lee, Derajj and Khugen, the then resident DJs at Barbarran, will be bringing back the old R&B, disco and house classics by Moloko, Stardust, Phats and Smalls, Pete Heller, Armand van Helden and more. It will be a fitting closure for this round of the Remember Series after going through over 20 evolutionary years of discography.

“We all grew up sneaking out to the clubs when we were younger just to experience what the hottest clubs had to offer, memories most of which will forever remain as defining experiences right into our adulthood, so we were thrilled to be picked by SmoovePinch as the official venue” said Joanna Chee from Bond, Avenue K.

“Maybe we are getting older; a new generation of clubbers are taking over the scene. In any case, we’ve seen Retro nights getting back into fashion and you should have seen the excited responses and anticipation on the faces of people when we mentioned the individual clubs we are featuring. The success of the launch and the following nights was a validation of the demand and this is just the beginning”, Arvind added.

Not intending to follow the ubiquitous pop tunes and mixed up styles played during the various Retro nights organised in town currently, the music for the Remember Series will be specifically compiled, recreated and tuned to the original sounds and DJ’s of the outlets featured. The event intends to cover over two decades of club classics and music as it used to be played then.

“We are bringing out all the hit tunes of the past by the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Shalamar, Whispers, Cheryl Lynn, Soul II Soul, Salt n Pepa, TLC, Maxi Priest, Mary J Blige, Milli Vanilli, Shaggy, Jade, Seduction, Naughty by Nature, En Vogue, Bobby Brown, Arrested Development, Kris Kross and many more over the four nights,” said Baze, Scandals and Saqs former DJ, Mr Q.

The original and guests DJs of the featured clubs have been brought back to jam together just for old times’ sake. To add more spice to the music, the DJs will take turns playing a few tracks each and then switch.

June Neoh, Marketing Director of Moet Hennessy, Riche Monde Malaysia said guests at The Remember Series will be introduced to the specially prepared cocktail made with Hennessy V.S.O.P and Red Bull. It will provide them the opportunity to discover a new concoction with the classic brand, apart from the various mixers available.

“There is no club in town where you can get all the great R&B soul hits the same way it was played then, which is understandable, as most clubs now focus on current commercial Hip Hop and House music due to mainstream demand, but there is a niche influential market for this concept.”

With the success of the nights organised, the latest info from SmoovePinch is that, there will be a continuation to the current Remember Series with the future tributes being dedicated to past clubs like ‘The Backroom’, ‘11LA, Phase2 and Faces’, ‘Movement’, ‘Betelnut and Brannigans’ and a few more clubs currently being planned by the organisers SmoovePinch.

“We wanted to make this event special as these clubs were legendary in their days. We had everyone emotional getting reunited with old friends and recalling memories from the past triggered by certain tunes from the past. For those who missed out, this is your one chance to experience how it was then. We also hope that those involved in these former clubs will come out to join us too and show them how to party. We want them to remember,” concluded Dave Avran.
