Defining World’s Number One: Paul van Dyk at Zouk Review
What: Paul Van Dyke
Where: Zouk KL
When: 3 February 2006
As expected, Zouk was packed with masses of people on 3rd of February as the World’s Number One DJ, Paul Van Dyke of Germany, came down to Kuala Lumpur as part of his Politics of Dancing 2 Album Tour.
Talking to the people outside, some had waited since 7.30pm to get the ‘privileged’ entry but somehow many were left disappointed when the organizer messed up the distribution. Ain’t no mountain high enough for the pleasure of PVD’s magic though as fans waited patiently to get in. At around 11.00pm, the inside of Zouk was banging with the excellent handy work of its resident DJ. You can feel the anticipation in the air as the crowd started to scream everytime the ‘mat salleh’ technician came on the console.
Superstar show from this world-class DJ, the man everybody was waiting for hailed the deck at exactly 12pm and the crowd went wild. The crowd already hyped up and tease by the resident DJ’s session, was ready to party!
Looking very much the picture of perfection, PVD, in his white-stripped collared shirt and cool demeanor started the session hard and thumping. With just the right touches of breaks in between to let you catch your breath (Coldplay track), the dude’s first half was intense. By this time Zouk was so packed, you wished that the roof would just open up to let some air in.
In the second half, PVD mixed a heady selection of old and new, with some of his own (I Know You Want Me) with club anthems (Reflekt’s “Need To Feel Loved”). The crowd was flying high from all the intensity, as he teased the crowd with a lull of (almost) silence and then pounds on the beat, spreading raptures all across the dance floor.
PVD is no Carl Cox. You won’t see him bouncing and grinning away while he spins but he is a sincere and passionate DJ. His music is strong and full of emotions. He subtly interacts with the crowd by spying them mockingly with the console lights, he gives a glance and a glint of smile that slips. You wished he would just keeps on going. It was already pass 3am and though the Zouk people was already signaling the time, he went on three more mixes, ending it with the profound and very fitting “Time of Our Lives” from his Reflections album.
As the night ended (with some lucky punters coming out with their awesome PVD T-shirt that he gave away and other goodies – I was so envious) you can see that the crowd did had the time of their life. PVD deserves to be crowned World’s Number One. He was amazing. The gig was amazing. If only the venue was an open field rather than a over packed super club. Now, THAT would make it all amazing!
